Abstract

Population ageing is one of the major contemporary challenges facing Europe and Portugal, particularly in rural areas. As such, it is important to question how the built environment can contribute positively to a sustainable and appropriate response. This research explores how the strategy of reusing and adapting disused school buildings can transform them into senior facilities that promote the well-being and quality of life of the elderly population. Adopting a theoretical-practical approach, the study investigates the feasibility of reprogramming a school building, originally designed for children, for a new purpose aimed at supporting the senior population. It draws on the principles of active and healthy ageing and examines the role of architecture in creating inclusive environments. It also analyses two international reference cases that have applied this strategy of reuse and adaptation for senior equipment. Building on this theoretical framework, a comparative analysis is conducted between two former primary schools in Arganil, Sarnadela and Rochel, both noted for their cultural significance. The research includes a co-design activity, which enabled the collection of relevant data on the needs and preferences of older residents. Based on the theoretical framework and the results gathered, the functional reorganisation of both interior and exterior spaces of the school building selected as the case study is analysed. This approach aims not only to meet the specific needs of the elderly population but also to preserve the building's cultural value and reactivate its social role in the community.
