Abstract
Threshold and low fatigue crack growth rate data was obtained as a function of R in air and 3.5% NaCl in a medium strength plain carbon steel. The true delta K(th) value was obtained and used to establish a relationship between fatigue threshold of cracked specimens and fatigue strength S (N=10^7) of plain specimens. It was found that in this material the size of the cyclic plastic zone and the material grain size are the controlling parameters in ultralow crack growth rate tests and define the transition between Region I and Region II of crack propagation.
