Abstract
This thesis addresses the design of DC-DC converters for space applications, particularly, it explores the design of the DC-DC controller at system level, which should be the primary step of the whole design when aiming to reach the integration for such a complex system. The work started by a state-of-the-art analysis on DC-DC converters for space applications, which outlined who are the key players on this field and also some technical features concerning the existing solutions, such as architecture, type of control etc. Based on this study, the presented work discusses and evaluates different kinds of control and modulation techniques, leading to the overall architecture definition. The design started by implementing a Matlab model to identify which should be the exact signal characteristics for the control block. Then, the main effort was to build a complete and robust Verilog-AMS model of the complete system within the CADENCE design environment. The models developed for each controller building block were completely validated and are now available to compose and explore different control solutions at system level. Moreover, this system level approach is fundamental to validate the project at the top level within reasonable simulation times and accuracy. Finally, final result shows the validity of the developed project.
