Abstract

The unique qualities found in ceramic materials result in a versatility hardly found in other material classes. Technical ceramics, also known as high-performance ceramics, are materials whose structural and thermal properties make them a suitable alternative in applications where all other classes fail, thus opening new possibilities in mechanical, materials, textile, electronics, and even medicine and pharmacy. In this context, this work focuses on the study of the influence of manufacturing parameters on the final properties of a dense cordierite (formed by extrusion). In addition to the physical, structural, and microstructural study of the raw material, batches of 10 samples were submitted to temperatures of 700º, 800º, 900º, 1000º, 1100º, 1200º, and 1300ºC each at times of 10 minutes and 3 hours to study the influence of the temperature and time on the final properties of the studied material. It is demonstrated that up to 1000ºC, temperature and time do not exert significant effects and that an increase in temperature from 1000º to 1100ºC promotes crystallization of cordierite for times of 3 hours but not for times of 10 minutes. It is also shown a formation of a glassy phase. These characteristics and properties undergo very little changes for the remaining temperatures studied, up to 1300ºC hour levels.
