Abstract

O MuseumsQuartier é um vasto complexo cultural, situado no centro histórico de Viena da Áustria que, juntamente com o Palácio Hofburg, o Neue Burg e os Museus de História de Arte e de História Natural, configura uma área de grande força histórica e cultural na cidade. O projeto unificador do conjunto, realizado pelos arquitetos austríacos Ortner & Ortner, terminado em 2001, caracteriza-se pelo diálogo estabelecido entre o património histórico e a arquitetura contemporânea, com impacto significativo em termos de regeneração urbana. Os novos equipamentos culturais do quarteirão - Leopold Museum, Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (MUMOK) e o Kunsthalle - interagem entre si e conformam as presenças mais expressivas, na imagem global do quarteirão. Os diferentes espaços unem-se através do seu contexto e do espaço público partilhado que, com as várias portas e passagens, restaurantes, cafetarias, livrarias e mobiliário público, materializam um eixo urbano capaz de aproximar diferentes áreas da cidade. Este quarteirão cultural constitui um caso paradigmático onde a arquitetura de museus potenciou a revitalização da cidade, apontando também uma tendência para as estratégias de reabilitação do património e dinamização urbanística e cultural de outros centros históricos. O presente trabalho pretende analisar o MuseumsQuartier através da história do conjunto, do projeto de arquitetura de 2001 e das consequências que este proporcionou a nível urbano. Objetiva-se ainda o estudo das precedências desta tipologia de aglomeração museológica e das tendências apontadas pelo quarteirão vienense, numa tentativa de compreender as razões do seu sucesso e a sua possível influência noutros contextos. The MuseumsQuartier is a large cultural complex, situated in the historical centre of Vienna in Austria that, together with the Hofburg Palace, the Neue Burg and the Museums of Art History and Natural History, configures an area of great cultural and historical strength within the city. The unifying project, carried out by the Austrian architects Ortner & Ortner, was finished in 2001, and the dialogue established between historical heritage and contemporary architecture characterizes it, with significant impact in terms of urban regeneration. The new cultural equipments on the quarter - Leopold Museum, Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (MUMOK) and the Kunsthalle - interact and constitute the most expressive presences, in the global image of the quartier. The different spaces are united through their context and the shared public space, which with various doors and passages, restaurants, cafés, bookshops and public furniture, materialize an urban axis that connects different areas of the city. This cultural quarter appears as a paradigmatic case where museum architecture has potentiated urban renovation, pointing a tendency in terms of strategies of heritage rehabilitation and urban dynamics for other historical centres. This study focuses on the analysis of the MuseumsQuartier through its history, considering the architectural project in 2001, and its consequences at an urban level. It also aims at studying museum clusters in other contexts, and the trends pointed by this Viennese quartier in an attempt to understand the reason for its success and its possible influence in other contexts.
