Projecto Urbano para Benfica. Recriar o sentido do espaço público

The present work has as main objective the analysis and presentation of strategies developed in the class of Final Project, along the academic year 2011/2012, in Instituto Superior Técnico. The exercise consisted in the developing of an Urban Project to the North-West Crown of Lisbon, in order to qualify public space and propose new forms of articulation between the existing agglomerations. The project, object of study of the present report, pretends to do continuity of the mental map proposed in an earlier stage, developed in group, by the creation of a network of qualified public spaces, in order to articulate the existing reference urban elements. It is also intended to contribute to the continuity of the pedestrian network and soil permeability. For this, the proposal has restructured the road system, reducing the cross section of roads to facilitate pedestrian crossings. The insufficiency of public spaces which promote collective practices led to the creation of a reference public space, in a place where crosses roads and pedestrian flows, which aims to be the "heart" of the path, a place of articulation, of collective experiences, that serves the surrounding community. The theme of Public Space is exposed in a more theoretical chapter, in which are exposed some thoughts that accompanied the development of the proposal. In this chapter, are analyzed a group of urban situations, whose selection intends to reflect about nearby realities of the developed project.
