Resumo

Additive manufacturing of metal components faces the critical challenge of reconciling technical feasibility, mechanical performance, and economic viability. This dissertation investigates the mechanical and dimensional behavior of specimens fabricated via Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) using Ultrafuse 316L feedstock, exploring the effects of print orientation, deposition direction, and number of outer shells. A parallel study on specimens produced by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) provides a benchmark aga inst this wellestablished process. The methodology integrates tensile, compression, and three-point bending tests with measurements of density, surface roughness, hardness, repeatability, shrinkage, and dimensional accuracy. A comparative cost analysis further elucidates the economic appeal of each technology. Results demonstrate that FFF specimens exhibit enhanced ductility and a more isotropic mechanical response in certain build configurations, albeit with reduced dimensional precision and surface finish quality. However, the substantially lower unit costs position FFF as an economically compelling option for low-volume production and functional prototyping. Although it is still maturing, metal FFF shows significant promise for industrial applications. Its straightforward operation, minimal capital investment, and design flexibility warrant continued research and development to address remaining challenges in accuracy, surface quality, and process reliability.
