O processo de reabilitação de umas antigas Casas Nobres na Rua da Esperança em Lisboa

This dissertation aims to document the impact that the values of cultural significance have on the rehabilitation process of an old residential building located on Rua da Esperança, once the main axis connecting the city of Lisbon to the territory to the west. The building is inspired - as to its genesis and characteristics - by a palace typology that was seen to proliferate as a consequence of the sudden return of the Portuguese court families to the capital of the Kingdom, immediately after the restoration of independence over the period of Spanish government. Composed of two parts, and being the first related to the historical framework of the case study where a set of values is identified and presented, the dissertation also contains a second part that focuses specifically on the process of the work. The focus is thus on the main players present in the work whose testimony was collected through individual interviews. These focus on the role that these professionals play in the site and the major adversities they face during its course, exploring their understanding of the values of cultural significance present in the site, and the impact that these - previously identified values - had on the decisions taken. In conclusion, a reflection is made on the quality of the architectural intervention in relation to the preservation and maintenance of these cultural values that were raised, highlighting the reasons that hindered the communion between these identity values and the modernity that is imposed on it.
