Abstract
Water is an essential asset for the maintenance of livelihoods, and the present imbalance between demand and availability is becoming increasingly worrying. In order to guarantee the sustainable access to water, in quality and quantity, technologies have been improved to enable the reuse of treated wastewater as an alternative source of supply. Thus, it is recommended the technology of wastewater treatment by membrane biological reactors, which ensures the high quality of the final effluent. In Portugal, interest in wastewater reuse has been increasing, due to the recent droughts, awareness of water value, as well as political reasons, in the scope of developing sustainable solutions. Aware of the situation of water scarcity lived in the county under study, this one expressed interest in promoting an alternative water source to the current one. Thus, this dissertation addresses, as a case study, the reuse of effluents from the main WWTP of the county, for industrial purposes. For reasons of confidentiality it was decided not to disclose the name of the municipality. In the scope of this work were equated three scenarios, where the infrastructures are being submitted to pre-dimensioning, preliminary estimation costs of capital and maintenance operation, as well as an economic feasibility analysis. Despite the high costs, it is considered that the Scenario 1 (which corresponds to the use of the wastewater from the "A" WWTP for partial satisfaction of the industry's water needs) is very promising from a political, environmental and social point of view.
