Abstract
The Sheet Metal Forming industry is being confronted with continuous market changes which imposes a more flexible and agile industry. In particular, tool makers and stamping companies are increasingly requested to participate in the design of the product and the process and on the production of prototypes and small series in very short time and with low costs. A methodology proposed to answer to this demands, is the combined use of virtual prototyping; with the rapid manufacturing of the stamping tools and, the development of the modular tool concept. For the development of this methodology some laboratorial stamping tests were done (using active tools produced by the several rapid prototyping techniques) in order to evaluate the materials more appropriate to support the stamping operations. The performed tests were the biaxial expansion tests (bulge test) and the deep drawing tests of circular cups in an Erichsen Universal Sheet Metal Testing Machine, in order to consider the two typical modes of solicitation in stamping: expansion and retraction. The rapid prototyping materials that had shown a better behaviour in the laboratorial tests were used in the production of the tools, for the two industrial cases investigated. Very promising results were obtained, in terms of part production. However, the technologies for which the time and costs were shorter had shown some elastic/plastic deformations, which could limit their use for parts with very tight geometry requirements. In this paper detailed analysis of tool and part deformations is analysed and some conclusions are drawn.
