Casas de madeira em Portugal - Metodologia de apoio ao projecto de Arquitectura

The aim of the thesis was to develop an architectural design method for the construction of wooden houses, intended to be used by Portuguese architects in the national context. The need to contextualize the problem required a prior task of selection and organization of the knowledge about the wood houses sector, framed by an architectural perspective. The definition of the design method was only possible after the conclusion of the following tasks: contextualization, state of the art about design methodologies, and development of the case studies. The contextualization phase required the clarification and the proposal of specific terminologies involving concepts related to architectural typologies and construction wood systems. To consolidate the knowledge about the research object a review of the most significant literature in the areas of Architectural History and wood construction was carried out, with a focus on the typology of the single-family house. The wood house market was explored by surveys and interviews with national construction and manufacturing companies. Then it was prepared a case study that consisted in developing a project of a single-family house with four different wood construction systems. The preliminary definitions of the project were supported by relevant manuals about the main building systems (wood frame, post and beam, logs and cross laminated timber). Based on the problems identified (in the surveys and in the case studies) it was then possible to define a design method. The method is presented by means of decision-support tables and lists of procedures covering the design of architectural solutions supported by specific quality strategies. The assessment and the selection of the “best” solutions is also considered by the use of a multicriteria decision support process. The proposed method is focused on the program and sketch design phases. In the program phase, the development of a catalogue of architectural typologies, including construction and formal systems, allows an approach that makes the choice process more effective, ensuring customer satisfaction. This typological approach clarifies the dialogue between the architect and the client allowing to set design rules that promotes the customization and the formal quality of the solutions. When in the sketch design phase, the adoption of weighted decision matrices and durability strategies, construction integrity strategies and economy strategies, aim to ensure the construction quality of the solutions. The client’s independence towards the wood house companies is one of the assumptions of the method, however, the method recommends working closely with them. The collaboration between architects and these companies can be beneficial for the solution’s quality and durability because of the integration of their experience and expertise.
