Resumo
AISI H13 and P20 tool steels are commonly used in the manufacturing of polymer injection moulds. P20 is furnished in the quenched and tempered state while H13 steel can be used both in the annealed state and quenched and tempered state. Welding technologies are frequently applied to repair polymer injection moulds, namely due to changes in design and to alterations due to use. The application of welding technology in plastic injection mould repair is not simple due to the mould material itself (high alloy steels), to the complex shapes with reduced thicknesses, small tolerances, and hard-to-reach-areas. Welding tool steels moulds is also extremely demanding in what regards the mechanical/metallurgical know how and the welder?s skills. The aim of the present paper is to investigate the metallurgical behaviour of AISI P20 and H13 tool steels, after TIG welding. To attain this purpose, several tests were made in order to evaluate the influence of the welding parameters and pre-heating on the welds made using TIG welding. The metallurgical behaviour was assessed through the microstructural properties and micro-hardness evolution. The results achieved with the two materials were compared.
