Abstract

Fish is an important source of protein in the human diet and its consumption has been increasing. Since the decade of 1980 the increase in fish supply is due to the rise of aquaculture production while produc-tion from capture remains constant. The aquaculture practice in coastal zones has been increasing globally and in Portugal. However, this situation presents new challenges in management due to the spatial and temporal variability of meteorological and hydrologic conditions, as well as the limited space in coastal zones. Numerical and hydrodynamic models are important tools in the management of coastal activities and aquaculture, allowing a more informed decision making by using predictions on the state of the ocean. In this dissertation a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model in the area of the port of Sines, Portugal is presented. The MOHID modelling system is used which utilizes a finite volume approach and an Ara-kawa-C staggered grid for spatial equation discretization. The Sines model is implemented following a downscaling methodology from an operational model for the Portuguese coast. Its focus is on the aqua-culture area in the port of Sines reaching a spatial resolution of near 25 meters. 7 sigma layers are used on the surface followed by cartesian layers. The model was calibrated considering several porosity scenarios for the breakwater in the port of Sines. It was validated with temperature and tide time series and temperature, salinity, density and velocities profiles recorded in situ.
