Abstract

The development of high power diode lasers has offered a new laser source for welding with technological advantages, namely due to the increased flexibility allowed when compared with other solid state lasers. Plasma welding has long been a an arc welding process used for achieving high quality and high productivity in thin sheet welding. Welding with a CO2 laser produces a keyhole mode which leads to high productivity rates originating rapid cooling rates leading to high hardness discontinuities across the weld joint. Diode laser welding opens up the possibility of increasing flexibility of the welding process with good weld characteristics. The influence of welding speed and power on weld geometry, penetration depth and bead width was investigated in diode laser and plasma welds. Diode laser welding was strongly affected by the focal length of the optics and by the shielding gas. It has proven to be suitable for conductive welding with low spatter, good beam stability and easy adaptation to robotic welding. Based on these trials and' other development studies, the diode laser has demonstrated it is a viable commercial welding process for a large range of applications.
