Abstract

Part I of this work deals mainly with the macroscopic approach to fracture presenting a review from the Griffith crack theory till the theory developed by Sih. Once the theoretical bases of Fracture Mechanics have been explained the authors wish to publish in next parts (II & III) the actual methods for designing against fracture (Part II) and refer in Part III fatigue and corrosion fatigue problems with emphasis on the microscopic behaviour.
