Luís Amaral got his PhD in 2012 from Universidade de Aveiro with a thesis on the microstructure design of electroceramics, with emphasis on the constrained sintering of functional materials and on the kinetic and dielectric properties of grain boundaries. He is currently working as post-doctoral research fellow at the Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, on electrolytic hydrogen evolution in alkaline media using RTILs and Schiff bases.
