He is a research materials-chemist which work has been mainly devoted on the preparation/functionalization of macromolecular materials by ionizing radiation techniques, for biomedical and environmental applications, catalytic processes and conservation/preservation of CH artefacts. For almost 6 years, he was the Technical Director of the Portuguese cobalt-60 irradiation facility (UTR) located at CTN/IST. He is the scientific supervisor of the Laboratory for Macromolecular Materials, being one of the two national experts in the preparation and functionalization of macromolecular materials through ionizing radiation techniques.
