João Alves was born in Lisboa (Portugal), graduated in physics (1987), MSc in applied nuclear physics (1992) and holds a PhD in physics (biophysics) (2000). Is a Principal Researcher at the Department of Engineering and Nuclear Sciences, of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) at the Universidade de Lisboa. Head of the Radiation Protection and Safety Laboratory of IST since September 2013, was appointed member of the management board of Polo de Loures of IST in January 2024. Member of the European Radiation Dosimetry group (EURADOS) working group WG2 on Harmonization of Individual Monitoring since 2001, was WG2 chairperson (2010-2015), EURADOS Treasurer (2007-2014) and served as Council Member elected for four mandates (2007-2019). Member of the European Association of Metrology Institutes (EURAMET) collaborated in projects Absorb (2015-2019), DOSETrace (2018-2021), SupportBSS (2020-2024), TraMeXi (2023-26), GiodeRadPros (2023-26), E-TRAIN (2025-2028) and European Metrology Network for Radiation Protection (since 2021). Contact person for Protugal to the Technical Committee on Ionizing Radiation. Team leader of the International Atomic Energy Agency POR6007 Upgrading the ionizing radiation metrology infrastructure in Portugal in the framework of the Technical Cooperation Programme. Collaborator in the LISBOA2030-FEDER-01317800 Laboratórios de Missão IST - Técnico Flagship Labs (2024-2027). Participated in the EURAD WP9 ROUTES European Joint Programme on Radioactive Waste (EJP-1) (2019-2024) and its predecessor EJP-JOPRAD European Joint Programme Towards Joint Programming on Radioactive Waste Disposal (2015-2017). His main areas of interest are characterization of thermoluminescent materials for dosimetry, individual monitoring of external radiation, environmental monitoring, staff and patient dosimetry in medical applications, implementation of regulations and legislation. Was head of the individual monitoring service for external radiation (1996-2014), accredited in compliance with the EN ISO/IEC17025 standard. Collaborated in the implementation of the National Dose Register and performed as external auditor for IPAC (national accreditation board). Co-author of the European Technical Recommendations for Monitoring Individuals Occupationally Exposed to External Radiation (Radiation Protection 160). Collaborated in research projects on mammography and CT fluoroscopy funded by the National research foundation (FCT, 2009-2014). Supervisor of graduate students, IAEA trainees, as well as 6 MSc and 1 PhD students. Lecturer in training actions organized at IST for Radiation Protection Officers and workers as well as on training courses organized by EURADOS, NATO, CIEMAT and the IAEA.
