My research is focused on establishing microwave reflectometry as a reliable advanced plasma control diagnostic technique in present and future fusion devices. This is a multidisciplinary field of research that involves diagnostic integration and control, real-time data acquisition and processing system design, advanced computing and signal data-processing algorithm development. BSc in Electrical Engineering at FCTUC/University of Coimbra (1991), MSc and PhD degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (1996 and 2008).

I am a researcher (Degree, MsC and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering), in the field of microwave diagnostics for fusion plasma experiments, with 30 years of experience in hardware and software engineering projects. I am a member of the Instituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear's - IST Microwave/Engineering group (since November 1991), and of the Max-Planck Institut fuer Plasmaphysik ASDEX Upgrade Team (since 1992). My present work and interests are geared towards establishing microwave reflectometry as a mature and reliable diagnostic technique, usable for the advanced control of fusion devices (AUG, COMPASS, ITER, DTT, DEMO). I participate regularly in EUROFusion MST1 experiments/tasks and on the development and maintenance of the ASDEX Upgrade Reflectometry diagnostic, of which I am the responsible for the hardware control and Real-time acquisition and density profile data processing. Of the various projects in which I participated, I was Scientific Coordinator of several EUROFusion tasks, and Principal Investigator of the EFDA tasks that culminated in the first ever demonstration of active plasma position feedback control using microwave reflectometry. I also actively participated in the Framework Partnership Agreement (F4E-FPA-375) for the development and design of ITER's plasma position reflectometers, either as Responsible Officer or as a member of IPFN's reflectometry specialists' team and I am presently involved in the design of DTT's plasma position reflectometers, and on the design of the Collective Thomson Scattering (CTS) diagnostic for ITER (Instrumentation and Control).
