Complete biography

Dr. Felisberto Lopes da Veiga Cortes is an architect, researcher, and sustainability specialist whose work lies at the intersection of architecture, housing, innovation, and sustainable development. He earned his PhD in Architecture from the Instituto Superior Técnico in 2026 with Distinction. His doctoral research focused on sustainable housing solutions for informal settlements through the use of earthen construction technologies in Cape Verde. His research interests include sustainable housing, informal urban development, earthen architecture, low-carbon construction technologies, and the processes through which innovative building systems become socially and institutionally accepted. In recent years, he has developed a distinctive research agenda focused on Superadobe technology and on understanding the institutional mechanisms that facilitate or hinder the adoption of sustainable construction innovations. He has authored scientific publications on sustainable housing, urban morphology, and construction technologies and is currently preparing the book Superadobe in the African Context: Foundations and Applications. He is also involved in applied research initiatives aimed at implementing and monitoring Superadobe housing models in Cape Verde in collaboration with researchers from the Instituto Superior Técnico and the Universidade Lusófona. With more than eight years of professional experience in architecture, construction, and project management, Dr. Cortes combines academic research with practical expertise acquired through work in Cape Verde, Portugal, and Luxembourg. His long-term goal is to establish an internationally recognized research programme dedicated to sustainable housing, earthen construction, and the institutionalization of sustainable construction technologies, contributing to both scientific knowledge and the global transition towards more sustainable built environments.
