My Ph.D. proposal aims at developing scientific research in the area of Networked Cyber-Physical systems, which in a sense can be separated into two parts: a computational system that must include a network and a physical system in which the former is merged. I am particularly interested in contributing to bridging the gap between network science and control theory. This has sprung from my recent experience at ScoreLab of the University of Macau in the part of the group dealing with network problems. The relationship between graph theory and Markov Chains in infection networks with linear models from control theory has motivated me to invest more time in learning and developing my understanding of topics at the intersection of these two (apparently) distinct areas. In saying so, I believe that my interests are aligned with those of the program. My future career call is towards the application combined with research in the industry and, to pursue that career path, a PhD is essential. I have already been accepted in the Ph.D. program of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon. The Ph.D. is going to focus on the development of models for various types of network processes (infection, social, traffic, etc.) that can translate nonlinear operation or the need for extra state variables by an underlying simple linear system and an easy-to-analyze nonlinear function such as saturation. The work plan then evolves to translating tools from control theory to those areas. The key expected results will be theoretical guarantees of stability and convergence as well as optimal control input for those processes.
