Vânia Veloso has a Master in Industrial Engineering and Management from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa. Her master’s dissertation focused on the study of Circular Economy in agri-food supply chains where, through a methodology based on case studies, she developed a framework to support agri-food supply chain entities in the transition to a more circular economy. Since her graduation, Vânia has been developing research in sustainable supply chains, as a member of the research team of the Centre for Management Studies of IST (CEGIST). She was involved in three different research projects. First, she joined the team of the DM4Manufacturing project, contributing to the development of a decision-support tool to assess the impact of introducing industry 4.0 technologies on the shop floor in terms of sustainability. Then, Vânia was involved in the MobFood project, leading the validation process of the methodology she developed in her master’s thesis, by conducting interviews with the consortium companies. After that, Vânia integrated the team of the mSSChain project. This project aimed at developing generic and innovative models to support the management, planning, and operations of sustainable supply chains subject to high uncertainty levels. She is now in the second year of her Ph.D. in Engineering and Management. The main goal of her PhD research plan is to fill the existent gap in the literature regarding the study of symbiotic supply chains. To do that, she intends to employ operations research methods that will allow the development of a model that combines optimization and simulation techniques for the design and performance assessment of these chains, considering sustainability metrics and the impact of factors such as risk and uncertainty. It is expected that this model can be used as a decision-support tool to help organizations achieve their strategic goals while ensuring an acceptable performance in the three dimensions of sustainability. Since 2022, Vânia lectures the master course of Operations Planning and Control as an invited assistant of the Engineering and Management Department at IST. Her main research interests include supply chain management, sustainable supply chains, circular economy, industrial symbiosis and symbiotic supply chains.
