Junior researcher (CEEC-FCT) at Centro de Química Estrutural (Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa) in the area of plasma catalysis and CO2 valorisation. Particularly interested in new challenges on the catalysis area in terms of new materials for environmental applications (e.g. waste valorization, greenhouse gases abatement).

Carmen Bacariza was born on 1989 (Caldas de Reis, ES) and graduated in Chemical Engineering at ETSE-Univ. of Santiago de Compostela (2007-2013). Got a PhD in Chemical Engineering from IST (2014-2018; "CO2 conversion to CH4 using metallic catalysts supported on zeolites"; CATSUS-FCT program) in the context of CEOPS-FP7 project. Acquired expertise in heterogeneous catalysts preparation, advanced characterization techniques and catalytic testing under thermal and plasma conditions. In this context, did an internship at IREC (ES) to apply zeolite catalysts on DBD plasma-assisted CO2 methanation, resulting in a publication at J. CO2 Util. (10.1016/j.jcou.2018.05.013). In addition, the relevant results obtained for this reaction over zeolite catalysts, scarcely applied till that moment, motivated the publication of new mechanistic insights in Appl. Catal. B (10.1016/j.apcatb.2015.02.026) and an overview in ChemCatChem (10.1002/cctc.201900229). Her PhD thesis obtained the maximum mark and was finalist of EFCATS Best PhD thesis award (2019). As a PhD holder, did a postdoctoral fellowship at CQE/IST, developing zeolite-based catalysts for NOx-SCR with CH4 (2018-2019, Sol-Care/ERANETMED project), and participated as research collaborator in Clean4G/P2020 national project. Afterwards, worked as project manager at c5Lab (Sustainable Construction Materials Association, https://c5lab.pt/), coordinating a research team devoted to power-to-gas implementation in Portuguese cement industries (2020-2021). The relevance of this position together with the background as a young woman researcher motivated her participation as keynote speaker in a SECAT meeting (Bilbao, 2020; https://jjii.secat.es/). Since November 2021, is a FCT-CEEC Junior Researcher at CQE/IST (Project: "Hybrid plasma-catalysis as a novel solution for carbon-neutral fuels production from CO2"; Ref: 2020.00030.CEECIND) and an invited professor at DEQ/IST. Besides, she is a management committee member of TrANsMIT COST Action, devoted to carbon capture and utilization. In terms of research outputs, published 31 scientific papers (17 in 2019-2023) in international (30) and national (1) peer-reviewed journals (>1327 citations, h index=18) as well as 1 preprint article. Presented >30 oral and poster communications in national/international scientific events and registered 1 patent. Collaborated with researchers from PT (CQE/IST, IPFN/IST), ES (IREC, Univ. of Basque Country, Univ. of Zaragoza), FR (Sorbonne Univ., CEA, ENSICAEN, École Polytechnique), and LB (Univ. of Balamand). Since 2018, peer-reviewed >14 scientific papers and, currently, serves as guest editor in a Special Topic at MDPI (https://www.mdpi.com/topics/4D5T229SZN). Supervised and/or mentored undergrad (6), MSc (10) and PhD (5) students, as well as international visiting researchers (1). Participates in science dissemination and outreach activities, as well as in acceleration programs.
