Biografia completa

He graduated (1997) in Chemical Engineering from IST, as best student of his class and achieved his PhD (2001) and Habilitation (2020) from the same University. Between 2004 and 2013, he spent a total of 18 months in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University working in collaboration with Dean University Professor of Chemical Engineering, Ignacio Grossmann. A major output has been the Cyber-Infrastructure site: www.minlp.org.His research interests are at the interface between Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, known as Process Systems Engineering (PSE). He has tackled real-life industrial problems from a variety of sectors: pulp and paper (Metsä Tissue, Celulose do Caima, Portucel); chemicals (SASOL, Dow Chemical, Unilever, Hovione); cement and steel (ABB, Acciai Speciali Terni); plastics (Ferro Portugal) and petroleum (ExxonMobil, Ecopetrol). He is known for his mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) models and MILP-based algorithms for process scheduling and global optimization of non-convex problems with bilinear terms. These have been based on the Resource-Task Network (RTN), Multiparametric Disaggregation and Generalized Disjunctive Programming. Pedro Castro has coordinated 9 projects worth roughly k€ 733 dealing with mathematical programming approaches for optimizing the design and operation of industrial plants. He has authored more than 80 ISI-indexed journal articles (9% as sole author, 64% as first, 76% as corresponding author), receiving over 3000 citations for an h-index of 33 (Scopus), and has been invited to give over 20 lectures and short courses worldwide at: Åbo Akademi University, Aalto University, ABB Corporate Research Center, Carnegie Mellon University, INTEC & INGAR (CONICET), King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Universitat Rovira i Virgili and University of Petroleum Beijing. A study by Stanford University listed him in 2022 as One of the World’s top 2% Scientists Ranked 360 (6th in Portugal) in the subject field of Chemical Engineering Pedro Castro was co-advisor of the thesis of João Teles (PhD in Engineering in Management, IST). He hosted visiting PhD students Qi Liao (China University of Petroleum at Beijing), Hossein Mostafaei (Azarbeijan Shahid Madani University, Tabriz, Iran) and Li Ting (University of Science & Technology, Beijing, China), who all came with their own funding. Current teaching activities involve graduate courses in Process Design, Process Optimization, Synthesis and Integration of Processes, Total Quality & Operational Excellence, where the focus is on solving mixed-integer linear or nonlinear problems with Excel and GAMS.
