Dr. Gonçalo H. A. Correia graduated from Técnico Lisbon, Portugal, in civil engineering. He earned his Ph.D. in Transportation Systems at the same university, closely linked with the MIT-Portugal program. He was then invited to serve as an Assistant Professor at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, where he lectured and conducted his first independent research. He was an Associate Professor in the Department of Transport & Planning at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands from 2014 until 2026. He is currently a full Professor in transport modelling and optimisation at Técnico Lisbon. His main research focuses on planning and operating urban transport systems for sustainable development. He focuses on Transport Demand Management strategies, innovative services, and technologies such as ridesharing, carsharing, and automated vehicles to address urban traffic congestion and emissions. His work primarily employs operations research (mathematical optimisation and simulation), data-driven AI methods, and behaviour modelling. At TU Delft, he investigates the impacts of automated driving and electric vehicles on mobility and urban development. He has been involved in numerous research projects, including V2G-QUESTS (Vehicle to Grid for Equitable Zero-Emission Transitions in Positive Energy Districts) and MetaCCAZE (Flexibly adapted MetaInnovations, use cases, collaborative business and governance models to accelerate shared Zero Emission mobility for passengers and freight), where he served as Principal Investigator. He has successfully supervised 14 Ph.D. theses, 10 post-doc researchers, and over 75 master's theses in Portugal and the Netherlands. He has authored more than 100 journal papers, predominantly in WoS-indexed journals, including Transportation Research Part A, B, C, D, and E (Elsevier). He has served as editor-in-chief of the open-access Journal of Advanced Transportation (Wiley-Hindawi) and currently serves as editor-in-chief of npj Sustainable Mobility and Transport (Nature). He is on the editorial boards of several international journals, including Transportation Research Part A, Transportation Research Part C and Transportation Research Part E. He has taught 18 courses at bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD levels in Portugal, the Netherlands, and China, covering operations research, transport modelling, and transport planning. He coordinated the Traffic and Transportation Engineering (TTE) track of the civil engineering master's program at TU Delft, which the Shanghai ranking ranks in the top 10 worldwide for Transportation Science & Technology. He has been an invited lecturer at Beijing Jiaotong University in China for many years and at Purdue University in the United States. He advises various companies and institutions on the future of mobility and is a recognised international speaker on the impacts of mobility innovations. Gonçalo headed the section Transport, Mobility, and Logistics (TML) and co-directed the hEAT lab (Research on Electric and Automated Transport), part of the Department of Transport & Planning at TU Delft (https://www.tudelft.nl/citg/heat-lab/).
