Gracinda Sanches Fernandes has been a member of the Portuguese Order of Engineers since 1997. She is a Chemical Engineer and holds a PhD in Biotechnology and Biosciences from Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa. She also holds advanced training in Clinical Trials from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. Since 2024, she has been an Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Bioengineering of Instituto Superior Técnico, with Senior Lecturer responsibilities in the Master in Pharmaceutical Engineering. Her teaching contributes to advanced training across Pharmaceutical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering: Regenerative and Precision Medicine, Biotechnology, Biological Engineering and Chemical Engineering. Her academic activity integrates quality management systems, pharmaceutical manufacturing, clinical trials operations, medical devices, regulatory affairs, health economics and pharmacoeconomics, digital health, artificial intelligence, digital twins, biomaterials, nanosystems and regenerative bioengineering. Her work and translational interests connect microbiome science, biomaterials, nanosystems, regenerative medicine, medical devices, clinical decision support, regulatory lifecycle governance and translational healthcare innovation. Her work connects directly with orthopaedic and regenerative bioengineering through shoulder and elbow arthroplasty, orthopaedic implants, antibiotic-loaded bone cement, implant-associated infection prevention, digital twins for musculoskeletal systems and AI-enabled predictive implant surveillance. It also extends to dermatology and dermocosmetics through skin microbiome research, nanoenabled topical delivery systems, cosmeceuticals, microbiome–material interfaces and precision approaches to psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and melanoma. Gracinda Sanches Fernandes is also the CEO of BioChromoGene, a role she has held since 2002. Through BioChromoGene, she has developed long-standing activity at the interface of biotechnology, human medicine, veterinary medicine, the pharmaceutical industry, dermocosmetics, food and beverages, clinical research, pharmacovigilance, regulatory affairs, medical affairs, real-world data, real-world evidence, pharmacoeconomics, digital health and technology transfer. Her executive activity spans Portugal, Spain, Italy, France and Belgium, connecting scientific knowledge, regulated industry, innovation and market implementation. Her professional career includes more than 30 years of experience across academia, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and multinational industrial environments. Before leading BioChromoGene, she held production and operational management roles in major international companies, including Tate & Lyle / ASR Group and PepsiCo, with responsibilities in production, supply chain, quality, food safety, microbiology, audit readiness, operational excellence, CAPEX/OPEX execution and cross-functional team leadership. She has also contributed to the preparation and presentation of industrial business plans approved by PME Investimentos and has experience as a Lead Auditor for food safety and quality assurance audits across several European countries. As Coordinator/Facilitator of the Microbiome Community of BioData.pt | ELIXIR Portugal, she contributes to national scientific coordination in microbiome data, FAIR data practices, microbiome-derived sequence analysis, reproducible workflows, multi-omics integration and academia–industry knowledge transfer. She has also contributed to the organization and scientific development of the Microbiome PT Summit, including the 2nd Microbiome PT Summit in 2024 and the 3rd Microbiome PT Summit — Microbiome in Human Health in 2026. Her teaching and supervision activities include master’s dissertations and integrated projects in breast cancer microbiome signatures, skin microbiome in psoriasis and melanoma, clinical-trial acceleration, medical-device clinical quality management, AI-driven virtual rehabilitation, psoriasis severity stratification, shoulder and elbow arthroplasty revision-risk prediction, digital twins for elbow-joint modelling and pharmacoeconomic evaluation of new treatments. She has also coordinated a portfolio of student-led scientific manuscripts in AI-enabled CAPA, orthopaedic implant surveillance, digital twins, medical-device lifecycle governance, pharmaceutical manufacturing, EMA-aligned regulatory guidance, ICH E6(R3)-based clinical quality systems and regulatory quality frameworks. In 2026, Gracinda Sanches Fernandes joined the EWA GROW programme as an official mentor. Led by EIT Food and implemented in Portugal by BGI — Building Global Innovators, EWA GROW supports women entrepreneurs in transforming validated ideas and early-stage ventures into innovative, sustainable and investment-ready businesses. In this role, she contributes her experience in biotechnology, regulated industry, business development, risk management, go-to-market strategy, innovation and entrepreneurship to support the next generation of women leaders in agrifood. Her career is defined by the bridge between academic bioengineering and industrial execution. She combines scientific research, teaching, executive leadership, regulatory strategy, quality governance, entrepreneurship and international knowledge transfer, with a strong focus on translating biological, biomedical and technological innovation into sustainable impact for healthcare, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, dermocosmetic, veterinary and agrifood sectors.
