João Caldinhas Vaz, (IEEE S’91, M’98, SM’19), was born in Lisbon, Portugal, 1963. He received the Licenciatura, MSc and PhD degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 1982, 1991 and 1998, respectively. In 1989, he joined the Electronics Scientific Unit of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, IST, where he is an Assistant Professor since 1998. Supervised 2 PhD and 35 MSc theses. Has received 6 awards. Created 6 course units, 4 of them concerning high-frequency microelectronics circuits and systems. He is a senior researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), Wireless Circuits-Lx research group, since its foundation in 1991. Since 2021 he is the coordinator of the High Frequency Electronics Research Cluster, from IT Wireless Technologies Thematic Line. Published 13 articles in journals, 56 in conference proceedings and 1 book chapter. Since 1992 participated in 19 research projects being responsible by 6 of them. Since 2002, he is the responsible for IST access to European Union Europractice IC project. Dr. Vaz is IEEE senior member, and MTT, SSC and CAS societies member. Was chair of the MTT-AP-EDS joint chapter from IEEE Portugal Section (2013-2015). He was also the founder and student Counselor of IST IEEE student branch (2003-2009). Additionally, since 2004, he has been a reviewer of IEEE TCAS I and II, and MTT Transactions, magazines and conferences. Member of the Portuguese Engineering Council since 1988. Main research fields are high frequency CMOS integrated circuits and systems for telecommunication applications, ultra-low power fully integrated radios for IoT sensor nodes, and radio frequency transceivers front-ends for 5G (28GHz) bands.
