J. Fernando Silva was born in Monção Portugal in 1956. He was a Full Professor of Power Electronics at IST, teaching Power Electronics, Power Quality, Design and Control of Power Converters and Energy Conversion and Storage. He is an integrated researcher at INESC-ID. His main research interests include power semiconductor devices, modeling and simulation, new converter topologies, pulsed power, energy storage, smart converters and transformers, sliding mode, predictive and backstepping control of power converters.

J. Fernando Silva (M’76–SM’81) was born in Monção Portugal in 1956. He received the Dipl. Ing. in electrical engineering (1980) and the Doctor degree in electrical and computer engineering (power electronics and control) in 1990, from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (UTL), Lisbon, Portugal. He is currently a Full Professor of Power Electronics at IST, teaching Power Electronics and Control of Power Converters. His main research interests include power semiconductor devices, modeling and simulation, new converter topologies, pulsed power, sliding mode and predictive control of power converters. Prof. Fernando Silva is a member of the Portuguese Engineering Society and research coordinator at the Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Lisboa (INESC-ID).
