Francisco Nunes Correia got his Ph. D. in Civil Engineering, in the area of Hydrology and Water Resources, at Colorado State University (1984). He also got the Degree of Research Coordinator at the National laboratory of Civil Engineering (1983), in Lisbon, and he was awarded the Manuel Rocha Prize for Research (1985) and the Prize of the Portuguese Water Resources Association (1985). He is currently a Full Professor of Environment and Water Resources in the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Geo-resources of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), the main engineering school in Portugal, and Coordinator of the scientific area of Hydraulics, Environment and Water Resources in this school. He was founder (2010), former President of the Board (2010-2017), and currently President of the General Assembly of the Portuguese Water Partnership, a platform of enterprises, universities, professional associations and governmental agencies involved in water policy and technology. Along with his academic career, he was designated for several positions in public service, notably Minister of Environment, Spatial Planning and Regional Development of the Portuguese Government (2005 -2009). The President of the Republic conferred him the honorific decoration of Grand-Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique (2010) in recognition for his achievements in Government. He was also President of the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (2004-2005), National Coordinator of the POLIS Program for the Urban Renewal and Environmental Improvement of Portuguese Cities (1999-2003) Coordinator of the Portuguese National Environment Plan (1993-1995), and Director-General for Water Resources (1986-1989). He has been a Member of the National Water Council since its creation in 1993. He has been consultant in several national and international projects, including OECD projects on water governance, World Bank projects on water resources management in Brazil, water resources planning in Angola, and environmental projects in Macao (China). He was Coordinator of several European research projects, notably EUROWATER and WATER 21, and has extensive professional experience as researcher, teacher, and consultant in the areas of water, environment and regional development. He is the author or co-author of 9 books and more than 130 articles, chapters and technical reports on those areas.
