Prof. Augusto Casaca got an Electrical and Electronics Engineering degree at Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, Portugal. He got the M.Sc. in Digital Electronics and the Ph.D. in Computer Science, both at the University of Manchester, UK. Later, he got the degree of Aggregate in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. Full Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, presently he is a researcher at INESC-ID and senior researcher at INOV INESC INOVAÇÃO, both in Lisbon, Portugal.

Prof. Augusto Casaca got an Electrical and Electronics Engineering degree at Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, Portugal. He got the M.Sc. in Digital Electronics and the Ph.D. in Computer Science, both at the University of Manchester, UK. Later, he got the degree of Aggregate in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. Full Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, presently he is a researcher at INESC-ID and senior researcher at INOV INESC INOVAÇÃO, both in Lisbon, Portugal. At the scientific management level, he has been President of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the Instituto Superior Técnico, President of the Scientific Council of INESC-ID and Leader of the Communication Networks & Mobility Research Group at INESC-ID. Presently, he is the President of the Scientific Council of INOV INESC INOVAÇÃO. After the Ph.D., he directed his scientific activity into the areas of Digital Systems Architecture and Fast Electronics. In this context, he was Research Associate of CERN, Geneva, Switzerland, for the period of one year and Visiting Research Associate of CERN for four years, having integrated the LIP team in the NA38 experiment. Afterwards, his scientific activity was directed into the area of Communication Networks. He has participated in the European Research Programs in telecommunications, namely in the programs RACE, ACTS, IST, FP6 and FP7. He has participated also in several research projects at Eurescom, Heidelberg, Germany, having been Leader of the Project P616. He has also been the Coordinator of the Supernet project funded by FCT, in Portugal. He has actively participated in standardization activities in the area of Networking at ITU-T and ETSI. He has consulted with the Portuguese administration and companies in the area of communication networks and has been project evaluator at the European Commission, Brussels, Belgium. He has more than 150 scientific publications and has chaired or co-chaired thirteen international conferences and workshops on Networking and IoT. He was Chairman of IFIP Technical Committee 6 (Communication Systems) for 6 years, he is an Honorary member of IFIP Technical Committee 6 and is a Life Senior Member of IEEE. His present research interests are in the areas of wireless sensor network architecture, machine to machine communications, delay tolerant networking, Internet of Things (IoT) communications and IoT vertical applications, mainly in smart grid and smart water infrastructures.
