O CiTUA é uma unidade de I&D, classificada como 'Excelente' pela FCT. Com autonomia administrativa e financeira, permite aos seus investigadores o acesso a uma atmosfera científica internacional, bem como a uma dinâmica interna estimulante e colaborativa. Segue uma abordagem interdisciplinar dos problemas atuais e procura soluções inovadoras, assumindo como missão: compreender as interações entre o tecido construído dos territórios urbanos e as suas dinâmicas sociais, económicas, culturais e ambientais, e as condições que asseguram a coesão urbana e a habitabilidade, como resposta aos desafios e ameaças contemporâneos. O CiTUA estabelece ligações entre os resultados da investigação e programas educacionais de alta qualidade, promovendo a contínua partilha de conhecimentos dentro e fora da academia.
