Abstract
The growing need to decarbonize energy systems has increased interest in renewable sources capable of providing baseload power. In this context, Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) emerge as a promising solution, enabling the exploitation of geothermal resources in low-permeability rock formations through hydraulic stimulation techniques. This dissertation analyses the potential of EGS as a sustainable alternative for energy production, with a focus on its applicability in Portugal. To this end, geological principles, drilling technologies, and stimulation methods are addressed, along with the main technical and economic factors that influence their feasibility. The analysis of international reference projects provides a framework for understanding the current state of technological development. In this context, the United Downs case study, in the United Kingdom, is particularly relevant, as it was developed in fractured granites comparable to those found in Northern and Central Portugal. This case study highlights the importance of utilizing natural tectonic structures to improve hydraulic connectivity and optimize drilling costs. The results show that, although drilling costs represent the main economic challenge, EGS have significant potential as a continuous and low-carbon energy source. In the Portuguese context, their feasibility will depend on the integration of favorable geology, appropriate technological solutions, and a progressive development approach based on pilot projects.
