Abstract

The Wireless discovery came from the necessity of new versatility and speed in networks. In fact, to the air traffic controller, the microwave radio link, is one of the most important on his day to day, the main reason for that to happen it’s because the system provides indispensable information from all across the country, to keep the security on the air space. NAV Portugal is the company that provides air traffic services here in Portugal, ensuring regulatory compliance, an activity that is only possible through the use of all available systems, including the system by microwave radio link. This dissertation has as main purpose the presentation of solutions to be applied to an existing system by microwave radio link, which shows anomalies in part of the route and does not guarantee the reliability of data transmission, as would be expected. The most obvious factor that causes anomalies in the system is the atmosphere. The atmosphere causes changes in the direction of the beam that will deflect it from its purpose, which is the receiving antenna. For that reason we proceeded to prepare a small study, based on amateur weather stations, to focus on the behavior of the atmosphere in the area where the system has registered more failures. Finally, we will be able to present not only several proposals to change the system but cost estimates too, which we believe are the most appropriate for the system to be operational.
