O vale de Alcântara como caso de estudo: Evolução da morfologia urbana

The subject to be developed in this dissertation inserts in the study of the valley of Alcântara, a deactivated industrial area of Lisbon, that currently detains central position in the city after its integration in the urban spot during its growth process. The goal is to study the evolution of the urban forms, molded by important fractures and also for attractive elements that contains potential to revitalize. The understanding of Alcântara?s urban history, interpreted from the evolution of Lisbon, constitutes a fundamental study for the perception of its actual situation, as well as the understanding of its genesis since the Industrial Revolution, fundamental moment of the training of Alcântara, until the gradual disappearance of the industries. The cartographic and bibliographical elements are the base of comparative analyzes of several moments of Alcântara?s history, identifying five areas that represent the diverse types of evolution that had had place. The reflection regarding the relation of the city with its past, in the form of patrimonial values, has a relevant role in the study area, keeping in mind that it was a place of constructive experimentations in order to answer to the new industrial order. To perceive the paper of History and Architecture is the first step for the elaboration of concepts of intervention in this heritage. The functional answers that these buildings had given to its old occupations take them it a final reflection on the renewal of these buildings and its integration in the contemporary city.
