“Da (re)ocupação: o desenho dos espaços entre” stems from the reflection that time is not merely an external factor in the project, but a fundamental element of the design. Developed within the framework of the theme “Construir no Construído – Do território para a casa, do quarto para a cidade”, this project focuses on exploring how to reintroduce housing in the urban centre of Funchal, more specifically along the Ribeira de Santa Luzia. The proposal arises from a critical reading of the city and its evolution, seeking to understand the “built environment” - evoked by the theme - not merely as a physical reality, but also as an expression of the practices and memories that have shaped and continue to shape urban life. It is this imaginary that informs the construction of a new layer, as part of the city’s ongoing process of transformation, aware that others may yet come. At the city scale, the aim is to re-establish the atmosphere that once characterised the banks of the Ribeira and transforming a stagnant inner block to create new ways of living the city. At the scale of the house, the project intervenes on an existing building, valuing it and reinterpreting it. The proposed occupation seeks to expand its use, adapting to the new surroundings, without allowing the project to become an end in itself. That said, the layout is guided by a single timber structure, which concentrates the functions of inhabiting and contributes to an idea of adaptability.
