Musealização e adaptação de património industrial: a experiência das cidades de Lisboa, Roma e São Paulo nos séculos XX e XXI

Abstract

O estudo foca-se no processo de adaptação da arquitetura industrial, considerando edifícios industriais erigidos no final do século XIX e no início do século XX, e a sua eclética transformação em museus ou em centros culturais no século XXI. Nesta época, as edificações de cariz industrial apoiavam-se em referências estilísticas e estéticas do passado, ostentando exteriormente uma linguagem neoclássica, mas, ao mesmo tempo, integrando novos materiais, tais como o betão armado, coberturas tipo shed e estruturas em ferro. Desta forma, os novos materiais e a nova tecnologia vieram responder às exigências das indústrias, gerando uma era de experimentações e, consequentemente, uma nova linguagem arquitetónica. Comparando seis casos de adaptação em Lisboa, em Roma e em São Paulo, pretende-se analisar o processo de musealização, com o objetivo de compreender se o projeto de adaptação respeita o valor histórico, social, tecnológico, arquitetónico e paisagístico da arqueologia industrial. Em cada cidade, foram selecionados dois exemplos tendo como caraterística comum o facto de o projeto de musealização possuir relevância no desenho urbano e representar um bem patrimonial e uma memória coletiva. Por fim, deseja-se realçar o valor histórico-cultural destas arquiteturas industriais enquanto impulsionadoras da arquitetura moderna e testemunho da memória do trabalho, com o objetivo de reconhecer o papel da musealização como estratégia de preservação da preexistência e de uma construção social e cultural. Assim o estudo da arquitetura industrial representa não somente a história da industrialização, mas também, a história da arquitetura contemporânea. The study focuses on the process of adaptation of industrial heritage, consisting of factories built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, and transformed into museums or cultural centres in the twenty-first century. The industrial buildings at that time were based on stylistic and aesthetic references of the past, outwardly boasting a neoclassical language, but at the same time adopted new materials such as reinforced concrete, shed roofing and iron structures. New materials and new technologies have thus met the needs of industries, generating an era of experimentation and, consequently, a new architectural language. Through the comparison of six case studies in Lisbon, Rome and São Paulo, it is meant to analyse the process of musealization, to understand if the adaptation project respects the, historical, social, technological, architectural and landscape value of industrial archaeology. In each city, two examples were selected, having as a common characteristic the fact that the projects of musealization are relevant in urban design and represent industrial heritage and collective memory. In conclusion, it highlights the massive historical and cultural value of these industrial architectures as engines of modern architecture and witnesses of the memory of work with the objective of recognizing the role of musealization as a strategy for preserving pre-existence and a social and cultural construction. To this end, the study of industrial architecture symbolizes not only the history of industrialization, but also the history of contemporary architecture.
