Abstract

In order to reduce excessive oscillation amplitudes, suppress undesirable resonances, and avoid early fatigue failure of structures and structural elements, vibration control is essential. The use of piezoelectric materials, that convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice-versa, with shunted circuits, where energy will be dissipated, is a technique that can be used to improve this problem and has long been researched. A recently proposed tuning method developed for resistive-inductive (RL) shunts is implemented in a commercial finite element (FE) software (ANSYS) , followed by single-objective optimization approach to improve the cirrcuit configuration. The FRF for displacement around the first and fourth resonant frequency is used to evaluate the performance of the tuning method for two benchmark examples - a simply supported plate with a single pair of piezoelectric patches and a simply supported plate with four pairs of piezoelectric patches.A single-objective optimization problem is presented to obtain the shunted circuits configurations that minimizes the displacement amplitude. Two algorithms are used for this optimization, Global and Local Optimization using Direct Search (GLODS) and Simulated Annealing (SA). The tuning method solutions is compared to the optimization problem solutions.
