Abstract
In a scenario where data services are the heaviest ones in transport network and those who generate less income for transported bit, mobile operators continuously seek out for new technological solutions in a way to reduce leased transmission while minimizing investments in building own networks. The access network transport is typically assured by E1 leased lines which implicate high operational costs, and constitute one of the most expensive section for mobile operators. To solve this concern, in this work is studied the feasibility to implement Point-Multipoint radio systems in UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN). It was developed a traffic simulator only for downlink (because this is the direction where a higher traffic volume is transmitted), where were implemented different traffic models employing several statistical distributions, to which were made some tests in order to validate the sequences generated by Matlab rand pseudo-random generator. With the simulator it was possible to evaluate the data rate to each remote terminal served by a hub terminal, and find the optimized dimensioning of the remote terminals number supplied by the hub terminal within a sector. Through simulation of some scenarios it was possible to conclude that Point-Multipoint radio system support up to five remote terminals for 2G/3G, and contrasting to leased lines and Point-to-Point radio systems would have a significant economic advantage, since in only one year will get the payback return of the investment.
