Dwelling utopias: modern collective houses from the post-war in England, France and Spain (1945-1975)

A presente investigação centra-se no estudo das ousadas, e muitas vezes utópicas, casas coletivas construídas após a Segunda Guerra Mundial – durante o período dos trente glorieuses (1945-1975) – em Inglaterra, França e Espanha. Entendendo-as como a simbiose, sob um mesmo teto, entre múltiplas habitações e um conjunto de espaços comunitários de apoio, a investigação tem dois objetivos principais. Em primeiro lugar, contribuir para uma compreensão holística e tipológica da casa coletiva. Através da análise de 6 casos de estudo, e da relação com os seus antecessores, esboça-se uma “árvore genealógica”, capaz de identificar as principais caraterísticas do tipo de edifício, bem como as suas particularidades temporais e espaciais. Em segundo lugar, identificar as potencialidades e problemáticas associadas às casas coletivas estudadas. Através da análise do estado atual e do sucesso dos casos de estudo, sugere-se um conjunto de possíveis soluções arquitetónicas que poderão ser úteis na conceção de novas casas coletivas. Relativamente ao primeiro objetivo, a investigação propõe o “nascimento” ideológico do tipo entre os Socialistas Utópicos do século XIX, a sua “infância” nas experiências do período entre guerras lideradas pelo Movimento Moderno (1918-1939), e o seu “amadurecimento” na generalização da Arquitetura Moderna durante o pós-guerra (1945-1975). Centrando-se no “amadurecimento”, apresenta uma definição detalhada das caraterísticas de “input” e “output” das casas coletivas modernas do pós-guerra e esclarece as suas particularidades regionais: França como um lugar onde “nada foi deixado ao acaso”; Inglaterra, onde os edifícios foram planeados com uma “urbanidade a partir de dentro”; e Espanha como um território de “mutações aventureiras”. Quanto ao segundo objetivo, reconhecendo a complexidade do tipo de edifício, propõe que a conceção de futuras casas coletivas englobe a inter-relação de um conjunto de soluções sugeridas a partir de três domínios distintos: a propriedade, a gestão e, naturalmente, a arquitetura. The present research focuses on the study of the adventurous, and many times utopian, collective houses built after WWII, during the trente glorieuses (1945-1975), in England, France, and Spain. Understanding them as the symbiosis, under one roof, between multiple dwellings and a set of supporting communitarian spaces, it aims two main goals. First, to contribute to a holistic and typological understanding of the collective house. Through the analysis of 6 case studies, and the relation with their predecessors, it drafts a “family tree,” capable of identifying the main characteristics of the building type, as well as its temporal and spatial particularities. Second, to identify the potentialities and problematics associated to the studied collective houses. By analysing the case studies’ current condition and success, it suggests a set of possible architectonic solutions that might be useful in the design of new collective houses. Concerning the first goal, the research proposes the building type’s ideological “birth” among the 19th century Utopian Socialists, its “infancy” within the inter-war (1918-1939) experiments led by the Modern Movement, and its “coming of age” within the mainstreaming of Modern Architecture (1945-1975). Focusing on the “coming of age,” it presents a detailed definition of the “input” and “output” characteristics of Modern collective houses from the post-war and clarifies its regional particularities: France as a place where “nothing was left to chance;” England, where buildings were planned with an “urbanity from within;” and Spain as a territory of “adventurous mutations.” As for the second goal, recognizing the complexity of the building type, it proposes that the design of future collective house should encompass the interrelation of a set of solutions suggested from three distinct fields: ownership, management, and, of course, architecture.
