Abstract

This review highlights the advancements in catalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion, specifically focusing on the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides for the production of cyclic carbonates. Metal-coordinated complexes, including metal-Schiff base ligands, two-dimensional complexes, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), are examined for their high catalytic efficiency in this process, facilitated by the presence of Lewis acidic metal sites. Mechanistic insights are provided to explain the enhanced catalytic performance, emphasizing the role of metal coordination in optimizing reaction pathways. Furthermore, this review discusses the strategies for improving catalytic activity, addressing challenges such as reaction selectivity and scalability. The potential for industrial applications of these catalytic systems is explored alongside the prospects for CO2 conversion technologies in the context of environmental sustainability and product development.
