Abstract
Managing energy resources requires intervention in energy supply and demand, with a focus on sustainability, energy efficiency and renewable sources. It is necessary to adopt construction solutions that provide comfort and well-being with the minimum use of resources. The assessment of comfort and well-being in housing has several dimensions and although there are assessment methods, there is no national practice for the integrated assessment of multiple aspects, centred on the occupants, considering energy efficiency. This study seeks to develop and test an integrated method for assessing comfort and well-being in their multiple aspects and their relationship with the energy efficiency of buildings. The aim of this method is to carry out post-occupancy evaluations, identifying the comfort and well-being parameters to be improved in a dwelling, taking into account feedback from occupants, and proposing improvement measures that contribute to increased satisfaction and comfort. This method was applied to ten case studiesin Portugal and is based on surveys, indoor environment measurements and a collection of energy consumption and housing characteristics. This study showed that the relationship between energy efficiency, building characteristics, comfort and well-being is undeniable, but subjective, as people's perceptions are affected by their experiences, emotional state and other subjective factors. Comfort and well-being parameters to be improved were identified, and recommendations were formulated to improve the houses indoor environment. Of these recommendations, it was found that some have an impact on more than one parameter and on energy consumption and others do not affect energy consumption but contribute to overall comfort. After implementing the measures to improve thermal comfort, simulation models showed that the indoor temperature generally increases in winter and decreases in summer, reducing the need for air conditioning to keep the houses within the comfort range.
