Abstract

The present dissertation is the result of a personal concern about the professional practice of architecture that is driven by values of aesthetic and capitalist promotion. The study focuses on an analysis of the presence and role of image both in the contemporary society as well as culture and in the architecture of its time. The result is a parallel synthesis between the relationship of the image to human beings and the relationship of the image to architecture. In this way, the value of image as a thought-provoking instrument and its communicative worth are investigated, while at the same time a study of relevance of the image in the process of architectural projects and its importance for its communication is made, all in the light of the constant developments of history. This analysis is illustrated by five case studies, the studios were selected based on the relevance of the use of images in their projects and their ability to represent various orders of thought and communication practices. From the analysis, the role of image for the architectural and theoretical positioning, of the studios, in the architectural landscape is deduced. The reflection triggered by this dissertation intends to debate and question which values and character are attributed to images of architecture in contemporary practice. In conclusion, the present thesis aims to verify the relationship between image and architecture and also to understand the goals and conditions that drive this relationship.
