Abstract
Despite the growing demand for housing the construction of residential buildings in Portugal has been declining over the last decades. Currently, Portugal is one of the European countries with the highest levels of energy poverty and uncomfortable conditions inside buildings. Modular construction, which is faster and more efficient in terms of performance and construction control compared to the traditional construction method, is a solution with great potential to bridge the gap that currently exists in terms of both thermal comfort and housing in Portugal. This study aims to evaluate the thermal and energy performance of apartments with a concrete panel solution as part of the “R2UTechnologies - Modular Systems” project. To this end, numerical simulations were carried out to analyze the results and behavior of two types of T0 dwellings (with and without balcony), taking into account panels made with different types of thermal insulation materials (XPS, PUR, ICB and rock wool). The performance of these modular solutions was also studied for different locations, orientations and types of glazing. Numerical simulations were carried out in the absence (free float regime) and presence of an air conditioning system. Finally, by implementing low-emissive glazing, venetian blinds and considering the thermal insulation solution with XPS in the opaque envelope, it was possible to reduce final energy consumption by up to 20% for the apartment without a balcony and 40% for the apartment with a balcony.
