Abstract
This thesis investigates the role and impact of Deep Tech renewable energy technologies in expediting the global energy transition and achieving net-zero emissions targets. The research focuses on seven key technologies identified as frontier areas of Deep Tech with significant potential: green hydrogen, carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS), next-generation lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, waste heat recovery, AI in building energy management, and nuclear fusion. Using a novel readiness map methodology, the study examines these technologies across many dimensions including technological maturity, scalability, economic viability, regulatory support, and environmental/societal effect. The readiness map provides a holistic evaluation methodology to gauge the ability of each innovation to contribute to renewable energy targets. The research includes qualitative interviews, surveys, and data analysis to generate thorough readiness profiles for the selected technologies. By assessing their current stage of development, impediments to acceptance, and estimated timetables for commercialization, the thesis intends to give strategic insights for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and investors. The study is contextualized within the broader landscape of global energy transition efforts, analysing progress towards renewable energy targets, challenges in achieving 2030 climate goals, and the critical role of Deep Tech innovations in bridging the gap between current fossil fuel dependency and a sustainable energy future. This research contributes to the area by presenting a systematic approach to appraising upcoming energy technologies and their potential impact. The readiness map methodology and insights provided can inform strategic decision-making and investment prioritization to speed the development and deployment of revolutionary renewable energy technologies.
