Espaços Públicos Urbanos Adjacentes a Vias Ferroviárias: (Linhas de Orientação para uma Intervenção)

This paper aims to explore the neighboring areas of urban public spaces, particularly those that lie along railways in operation. These spaces, due to their limit and environmental characteristics less favorable to humans, tend to fall into disuse and are easily converted into wastelands, with experiences more or less obscure from the social point of view. Since this is an identical area to the one studied in the Final Project class of the Master in Architecture at the Instituto Superior Técnico in the academic year 2007/2008, which led to further research in this area. During the elaboration of the Project it was felt needed theoretical support for the realization of the class. Thus, based on some case studies: High Line in New York; A8erna viaduct, Zaanstad, and Plantée Promenade in Paris, are proposed guidelines for intervention in these areas so that they can be reintegrated in the city and used by its inhabitants and visitors. The conclusive notes present a critical view of the project work, based on the guidelines outlined in the study.
