Abstract
A theoretical oblique wave and current loading model on a floating flexible membrane is developed under the linearized water wave theory in different water depths. Green's functions in integral and series forms and dispersion relations are derived from the fundamental source potentials in various water depths. Further, the wave velocities in the presence of oblique waves and currents in different water depths, as well as existing theoretical literature results, are compared and discussed. Furthermore, a physical model is presented by utilizing the series expansion and dispersion formulas derived by using the Green's function technique. The computational correctness of the current solution is verified by inspecting the convergence study and validating against experimental test results recently published. The membrane deformation result obtained in this study is compared to existing nonlinear numerical Galerkin finite element method results, demonstrating good agreement and supporting the validity of the present findings. Various results were analyzed regarding the combined effect of oblique waves and currents on the different wave quantities, membrane deformation, and vertical loads on the floating membrane. It is found that as the value of the oblique angle rises with a certain value of current speed (CS), the membrane deformation becomes lower and the vertical load increases. This analysis provides the basis for designing wave energy converters and breakwaters by clarifying how oblique angles and CSs affect them.
