Abstract
The evidence of construction-related waste with impact in the product?s quality and the underlying costs makes it necessary for companies to be open to new management systems that will come to eliminate that waste, without incurring great investments. The concepts of Lean philosophy emerged in the construction sector adapted from the manufacturing industry, after its positive results in what concerns cost reduction, quality improvement, production control, as well as the relationship between actors of specific processes (internal to the company or external with suppliers and customers) were noticed. This new management system has been growing ever more on an international scale, with many companies implementing techniques from Lean Construction and its concept Just in Time, which defends the elimination of costs with unnecessary material storage. This dissertation proposes the introduction of the fundamental principles and concepts related to the Lean Construction system in a Portuguese company in the construction sector, analyzing the reality of the management system in place as well as the opportunities for improving the company?s production process. The research was performed via six case studies and a pilot project. In that project three tools were implemented: Value Stream Mapping, where the opportunities for improvement in a construction process were identified; the Last Planner System and finally Visual Management. From the main conclusions of this study, it is highlighted that the integration of Lean Construction principles make the improvement of the production system and the spread of good practices in the construction system possible.
