Abstract
Sustainability and transportation systems optimization are key elements in the development of cities, which may become more complex and more important in the coming years with their expected growth. This dissertation aims to promote knowledge about decision support tools and automated modes of transport, especially the Personal Rapid Transit (PRT). To this end, a review is carried out to the assessment methods and existing modes of urban ground transportation, with a review of the state-of-the-art Personal Rapid Transit, motivated by new technologies and urban transport needs. To explore and show the application, this dissertation has as a case study the connection between the Oriente Station and the Lisbon Airport. The station is located in the Eastern part of Lisbon, known as Parque das Nações, reformulated during and after the 1998 Lisbon World Exposition (Expo’ 98), and the connection covers residential, commercial and mixed areas, linking two relevant points of transport in the city. On the one side, the Oriente intermodal station, which makes urban, long-distance and long-distance connections for road and rail, and on the other, Lisbon Airport, with national and international connections. The most direct route is by Berlin Avenue where the case in study will be applied with an implementation and decision aiding study.
