Abstract

The question that will be addressed in this project is: what is the influence of the robot's gaze on the synchronization of a hybrid, i.e. a team made up of humans and robots? To answer this question, an observational study was first carried out. This resulted in two types of non-verbal behaviours, Task-oriented behaviours and Team-oriented behaviours. With these, the four conditions for the main study were created. The Random gaze condition where the robot never looked at the participants. The Task-oriented gaze condition where the robot only had Task-oriented behaviours. In the Task-oriented and Reactive gaze condition, the robot reacted to the human behaviours to create mutual gaze and joint attention in addition to the Task-oriented behaviours. In the Task-oriented and Proactive gaze condition the robot, in addition to the task-oriented behaviours, also regularly looked at humans to initiate mutual gaze with the participants. Using these conditions, the study was carried out to answer the research question. No support was found that the gaze influenced the synchronisation. However, it was found some effects of the Reactive Gaze on the ability to establish mutual gaze and on some subjective measures of team perception.
