Abstract

The constant scientific and technological evolution, along with the knowledge gained from past earthquakes, drives the improvement of seismic evaluation, design, and rehabilitation processes for buildings. This evolution results in the development of more up-to-date regulations that incorporate technical and scientific progress. The seismic evaluation of a building is essential to ensure its safety and structural integrity in the face of earthquakes. In addition to assessing the building's resistance capacity, it helps determine whether it is capable of withstanding these forces and identifies potential needs for structural reinforcement. In Portugal, since the 1950s, design rules have been implemented to ensure buildings can withstand seismic actions. Currently, the Structural Eurocodes are in force, with more advanced rules for earthquake-resistant design. A new generation of these Eurocodes is under development, with publication scheduled for 2027, aiming to harmonize the rules and facilitate their application, reducing the need for national annex options. This dissertation aims, in the first phase, to analyze the different methods of part 3 of Eurocode 8, both from the current version (NP EN 1998-3:2017) and the second generation under development (prEN 1998-3:2022), understanding the changes introduced. In the second phase, seismic evaluation will be conducted for a reinforced concrete building, constructed in 1983 in Lisbon, based on the provisions of both generations of Eurocode 8, using nonlinear static analysis (pushover) and the N2 method.
